Money comes and goes. Partners appear and disappear. We cannot control these things, even though most people spend a lot of time and energy trying to. We cannot control other people. We cannot control all of our circumstances. Things happen. The world continuously ebbs and flows as it pleases.
In the end it is not the externals that define who and what we are, but how we respond to them.
The path of Self-Knowledge is the road to investigating and uncovering the Self. How do I respond to the world, what do I choose to react to, what do I think about, what do I value, what makes me happy. What do I choose to believe, and why?
Self-Knowledge is gained through self-investigation: by listening to our own silences, by listening to nature, by allowing our own masks to fall away. What this road gives you can never be taken away from you. The journey eternally unfolds, deepens and expands. It satisfies. It feeds.
It is often tread alone, but most will tell you that having a guide makes the landscape of the soul easier to access, easier to work with. You are able to go deeper. It is the torch you hold in the darkest corners of your soul.
A guide clarifies. They can give you a map. They point out dangers and give you directions. They can tell you which trees to sit under, and which to avoid. They may never tread your exact territory, but they have excellent binoculars and the gift of seeing the whole picture. When you are lost in the wilderness a guide can be invaluable.
Above the entrance to the Temple of Apollo, where the Pythia, or Oracle of Delphi resided in olden times in Greece, was written “Know Thyself“. The Oracle was consulted on all manner of things, and the people who came to consult with her were both Kings and peasants.
I am a Sangoma – a traditional African guide. I throw the bones. The bones track your territory for me, they paint pictures of your situation. My ancestors are my guides. They see the view from the top, and tell it to me.
