I will be visiting Botswana for most of February – a wonderful yearly tradition I greatly look forward to. (Here we come Judy!)

There is a farm a little way outside of the capital city of Gaborone, and on the farm is a place called Ngwenyama Lodge.  Together with a wide array of other funky African doctors, I’m off to visit that place – the place of my initiation. 

Our time will be spent performing all our yearly rituals and ceremonies, living in mud huts and howling loudly at the moon.  We’ll get drenched in the Botswanian thunderstorms and heat.  There will be fire and rain and clouds and flies.  The darkness there is syrupy thick; the sunshine somehow more nourishing than anywhere else.

In my quest to share something of this place with you, I hit the internet and found this 14 minute video on YouTube today.  It’s titled “A Story worth remembering?  Unearthing Africa’s Identity” and most of the footage was taken at Ngwenyama Lodge. (The workshop described was run by my teachers, Niall and Colin Campbell.)

It is a well made film that ponders erosion of culture and the loss of African identity.  It looks at a process that utilizes pre-industrial methods of initiating people into the laws of nature, and follows the story of what happens during the workshop itself.

I will be completely off-line for the rest of the month, and although I will still be publishing the odd post, they are automated. I will only be able to publish comments when I get back folks.
